Tips and Resources for a Successful Trash Mob

Where & When

Location

Trash Mob can happen anywhere there is trash on the ground. To disrupt the norm and raise awareness, we often focus on high-traffic, public spaces (a busy train station during rush hour, a public park on a weekend)

Starting Location: Pick a clear spot for people to meet, with memorable visual references.

Route: Unless you are in an open space, such as a public square, decide on a direction for the group to go.

Finishing Location- Depending on the area, you may be able to go the distance, or you may only make it one block.

Timing

Flash Mobs can be as short or as long as you want, depending on how into it you get!

Starting Time: Do you want everyone to start at the same time, or do you want the group to get bigger over a period of time?

Duration: How long do you want to mob?  Whether it's a quick 5-minute spectacle or an hour-long walk, every bit helps!

Finishing Time: By determining how long the Trash Mob will go on, people can manage their pace, and latecomers have a better chance at catching up with the group.

Dress-up!

We encourage you to get creative! There are endless amounts of themes you can play with. Here are a few:

Super heroes, pirates, animals, pajamas, granny, kids, French maids, prom, time-travelers, celebrity look-alike, business executives, wizards and witches, ninjas, unicorns

Dressing up can also be simple!  Pick a color for everyone to where, or ask them to them arrive with a bandanna or hat.

And of course, you can also dress as regular citizens.

To cause a disruption, this is best with a large group.

Supplies

As a host, you can decide whether or not you want to provide gloves, bags, or costume pieces (e.g. bandannas).

Either way, it helps to have a few extra bags and gloves and bandannas on hand, just in case people forget - or you inspire people to join the mob!

Pro-Tips

  • Bend with the knees!

  • Look Up!  Once you finish mobbing, keep your eyes up.  You will likely continue to see trash on the ground, but if you stop for every piece - you will never get home!

  • Make it social!  Start with a picnic or a party, and pick a time to hand out gloves and get everyone mobbing!

  • Kick it up a notch for the 21+ crowd and turn it into a (responsible) Pub Crawl!
